What are some ideas of toys/games I can get my children that would help with reading, writing and math?

I am looking for educational toys/games that are appropriate for a 6 year old and a 4 year old.

  1. V-Smile video game system. They have different levels and teach all of these things.
  2. scrabble, one of those pop o matic games like trouble, yatzee
  3. Why not get them computer software? They have tons of great programs at Target and Best Buy...but I've seen more at Target. It's near the PC games
  4. my son loves his leapster tv...he's learned lots from it since he got it 2 mo ago for his birthday! leapfrog word whammer fridge magnets are neat.
  5. There's that V-Quest or V-Smile out there. It is played like a video game, but it teaches them a lot. It is advertised a lot on the T.V. There are things you can get at Best Buy, Wal-mart, K-Mart, and Target that would probably help with reading, writing, and math.
  6. Leapfrog is the best that I know of. My sister has two very smart boys and they just love playing with this stuff.
  7. We have the LeapPad plus writing and my 6 year old loves it. You can buy wonderful books that go in it (with the software cartridge also) I highly recommend it.
  8. workbooks you can buy them at kmart, walmart etc. they also have those educational systems you can hook up to you tv and they play games while they learn. I bought my son one for christmas and he is only 3.
  9. VSmile
  10. I agree with the first poster...V-Smile (made by vtech). Is it a video game system where they play video games, only they are all educational! =) In the commercial you hear the parents telling them to play their games before doing more chores. I've listed their website below for you to do more research on them. =)
  11. We have a 5 yr old son and we bought him a V-Smile last year and it is wonderful we tell everyone about it he has learned so much with this game system we started him out on his age level and he is already doing the 6 to 8 yr old games we still work with learning one on one and through books but this gives him a fun approach to learning and he does not even notice that it is a learning game .I would also like to add that most people have criticized letting children play video games but I would rather let my son play this then some of the other video games out there there is no violence .
  12. My favorite is the Story Book. It reads aloud while the kids follow along and tells them when to turn the pages. My son got his when he was three and loved it.
  13. There's a really cool karaoke computer game. It teaches reading and then you learn a song and can hear yourself sing it afterwards. I think it is made by viatech. My kids love it and they were 5 and 6 when I got it.
  14. Hi, Jumpstart pc games are great. We have Jumpstart preschool and Kindergarten, etc. You can buy them on ebay used or get them new for good prices at wholesale and bulk stores. I also buy them workbooks as a "treat". This year I bought my daughter the Leapster from Leapfrog.
  15. My son is 6 and he is getting from Santa the leap frog turbo twist spelling. I bought that for one of his friends in the same grade and his mom loves it. he uses it everywhere he goes. Its from grades 1-6. And every lesson is state approved so i ts not any harder than the level he is on now. I also got him the math one as well. As far as the 4 yr old , the V -tech looks cool. My son had gotten the Leapster. There are a variet of books and cartridges for this as well . Fun to learn. There is Math, Reading, Spelling.....really just about anything.
  16. I have a 6-year old and a 4-year old too (and a 2-year old). One of the things I like to do is play board games with them. They enjoy it and they learn at the same time. Simple games like Candyland and Chutes and Ladders are a good start. They like Mouse Trap too, and I've played other "older" games with them like Sequence and Compatibility and Risk and chess. They don't always get the whole game but they learn a little each time they play and they feel like "big boys" cause they get to play the same games they see me and my brothers playing. Believe it or not, the game that I've seen them learn and enjoy the most has been poker. They really enjoy counting the chips.
  17. My daughter is 6 and loves Scrabble Jr. for reading/spelling and Yahtzee (numbers/math).
  18. My son and I love the Leapster and Leap Pad. They will grow as your children grow and has helped my son be ready for school and pass his classmates.
