How is Chicago to Florida road travel around Christmas ?

I am planning 10 day vacation to Florida from Chicago by road around Christmas. How safe it will be ? Which is the best route to take, and what will be the weather conditions around that time ?

  1. Your drive is about 1,400 miles and will take about 21 hrs to Ft Lauderdale. Add time for motel, gas, and food stops. Follow the interstates...I-90, I-94, I-80, I-65, I-24, I-40, I-24 again, I-75, I-475, I-75 again, Florida Turnpike to your destination. I've made this trip at Christmas time and had to avoid I-65 in Indiana because of a huge pile-up that delayed travel for 6 hrs. This was due to high winds and snow. Stay tuned to AM 780 and AM 560 for traffic info until out of Indiana. Don't be alarmed by ice & snow as you near Chattanooga..I-24. It is in the mountains and storms are common. The alternative is US rt 41 from Chgo to Miami. It existed as a 2 lane highway long before the interstates and is still in use. Advice: get some maps from AAA and go to mapquest or Yahoo maps for routes: http://www.mapquest.com/maps?1c=Chicago&1s=IL&2c=Ft+Lauderdale&2s=FL http://maps.yahoo.com/#mvt=m&lat=34.00428&lon=-83.85651&zoom=5&q1=chicago%2C%20il&q2=ft%20lauderdale%2C%20FL
